For a bold attempt and a rare story to be made in Tamil, ‘Karungaali’ could have been a successful film if the makers had given it a due care in the screenplay, characterization and plausible reasons for the incidents and happenings.
The film is made as another good attempt that is joining the infamous league of poorly knitted screenplay.
The film opens with ‘Pottalam’ Ravi (M Kalanjiyam), while he is on the run from police, saving the life of Kanimozhi (Sunita Varma), a doctor. The doctor comes to know about the story (flash back) of Ravi and marries him after he comes out of the jail.
And the flash back is…
‘Pottalam’ Ravi, an orphan, along with Chengi, a girl, and other wanderers are being brought up by an old man, who teaches the ‘policy’ of life ‘Do all bad acts but never beg’. The gang joins ‘Dada’ Rajesh and indulges in all criminal acts. Ravi becomes the ‘Dada’ in the place of Rajesh when he kills his boss. Chengi, who insists Ravi to marry her, gets killed by Ravi when she becomes pregnant. Ravi becomes the incorrigible criminal, womanizer and a pervert, so much so to the extent that he copulates with a dead body of a girl.
The flash back ends and the present opens with Amudha Nila (Anjali) marrying her childhood sweetheart Gunasekaran (Seenu). The marriage life goes all well till they find that the couple will not be able to give birth to a child. The couple approaches doctor Kanimozhi for their problem, and this forms many pretexts for Ravi, who is the husband of the doctor, to cross into the troubled marriage of Amudha Nila and Gunasekaran.
Ravi makes his advances towards Amudha Nila to make her yield to his desires. The climax ends with questions whether Amudha succumbs to Ravi, what happens in the life of Kanimozhi and finally what Ravi is upto…
Kalanjiyam could have tasked his associates and assistants to help him in his histrionics. Sometimes his acting irritates with overacting and sometimes he disheartens with his numbness.
Anjali is the only consolation in the film. It was learnt that the actress accepted this role when she was all naïve in films. She had chosen the right character, but not the right script. She is grown up and can understand cinema now. Anyway, she can be appreciated for her emotions and expressions in the film. She did have put her efforts and it has clicked for this upcoming actress.
Sunita varma and Seenu would have fallen into the category of performers if the director had given a good shape to their characters. The characters fail and do the actors.Mu Kalanjiyam makes another bold attempt with his character and story. But the loosely tied screenplay and the unfitting shapes of characters fail to support the story. Kalanjiyam, the writer and director, who delivered good scripts in ‘Poomani’, ‘Kizhakkum Merkkum’, ‘Poonthottam’, ‘Nilave Mugam Kattu’ and ‘Mitta Miraasu’ fails here in ‘Karungaali’.
Srikanth Deva’s music and songs are so, so… Cinematography does impress us. Good work Sivasundar! G. Vivekanandhan, the producer, must be appreciated for bringing out such a bold attempt, a big risk indeed!
Sri Gurujothi’s ‘Karungaali’ does have entertaining factors with bold theme and scenes to make the audience sit through the entire film.

Fresh after the success of Ko, Jiiva makes his appearance in Rowthiram, his home production, under the direction of newcomer Gokul, in which he essays the role of a young man who does not keep mum to the injustices around him and fights for the aggrieved souls. It is a first time combination for Jiiva and Shriya and the team certainly looks fresh and good.

True to the title of the film, Rowthiram deals with the anger of the protagonist, its upshot on his family and its cascading effect.

For a debut director, Gokul shows promise. He attempts to pack in his first film, romance and a lot of action and succeeds fairly. He shows mettle in the scenes that build up suspense when Jiiva gropes in the dark on the whereabouts of his family and also in the ironical climax. He is successful in building up the curiosity to know about the identity of Gowri. The scene where the gang moves to throw acid on Jiiva is well conceptualized and suggests the substance in Gokul. The dialogues between the gangsters are quite natural. Gokul also makes a noticeable cameo and it is a pity that his role is very small.

Some scenes are neatly done especially the family and the romance blocks. However, these are not sufficient to buoy the story up as there is inconsistency in the pace. While the first half fairly manages to hold the attention, Gokul stutters to keep the audience hooked in the second half and his struggle to move the film forward becomes evident. The long action sequences also exhausts. The snag for Rowthiram comes from its lengthiness.

It is a cakewalk for Jiiva who has delivered his role with understanding and subtlety. He shows the anguish through eyes in the sequence where his family leaves him without information. His agility in the action sequences are a plus to the film.

Shriya provides the color and warmth to this otherwise ‘manly’ and ‘hot’ film and surprisingly keeps her glamour in check in most places. Prakash Raj does a small cameo and in the supporting cast, it is Jaiprakash who walks away with the acting honors with his natural and nuanced portrayal. Ganesh Acharya as the gangster has not much to do but to jive to the ‘Goli Maaro’ number.

On the technical side, it is stunt master Anal Arasu who has much work with the film being action-centric. His stunt choreography would be spoken about but the slow motion shots in most of the action scenes act as a downer. Costumes and accessories by Deepali Noor especially for Shriya are refreshing and relatable. Cinematographer Shanmugasundaram is adequate in his responsibility.

There is no lasting effect in the music of Prakash Nikky. The songs are well picturized and choreographed although a couple of them do not justify their presence for instance Goli Maaro Gangster and Malai Mangum Neram.

Rowthiram has positives going in its favor. If the screen play had been more linear and taut, it would have made a huge impact.

It’s after a long time that a horror-thriller-supernatural kind of film has hit screens in Tamil Nadu. It is a genre that was considered almost dead or as one that was monopolized by B grade English movies dubbed into Tamil and given some crazy titles. Along comes Muni and proves that an intelligently made movie of the horror-supernatural genre still has takers, a lot of them.
Muni is a story that revolves around Lawrence. The only son to his parents, he is brought up in an overprotective manner and grows up hearing lots of stories about spirits, ghouls, banshees, draculas and ghosts of all other types. As a result he ends up as a coward who is afraid to venture out of home after dark. Lawrence and his family have to shift their residence. The new house has something eerie about it, Lawrence and his family are not the only ones living in the house; there is someone else- enter Raj Kiran. You don’t get to see Raj Kiran, but only a mutilated half burnt corpse which takes a special liking to Lawrence and enters his body. Some of the scenes involving the half burnt form are good enough to send a chill down the spine of even people with a rock solid heart.

The first half comes to an end after keeping you riveted to your seats for over an hour. It casts a spell, the ghost does not get off your mind, the first half is ‘Thrill a minute.’

Then the second half commences, there is a let down of sorts here. Even though the first half scares the wits out of you, it does not tire you. You are asking for more excitement in the second half. But then the flash back of Raj Kiran, the person assumes prominence on screen. This was one part that should have been done in a very crisp manner. But what we get is a rather extended sequence with a generous sprinkling of comedy. Not that the comedy is boring, it is enjoyable; but we are just not in the mood for it. The comedy scenes involving Raj Kiran have a negative effect on the scary image that had been built around the ghost in the first half and when narration returns to real time you don’t feel as intimidated by the spirit as before.
The climax fight between Rahul Dev and Lawrence involving the use of a lot of magical aids (a la Harry Potter) has been very well shot. Watching this kind of a fight usually makes us feel like fools, this one does not. By the time the final credits roll by the director has redeemed the pitfalls at the start of the second half.
Lawrence turns out an energetic performance. He looks convincing in every frame and does more than expected. He does not fail to delight in the dance sequences; he lets himself go all out especially in the Kula Kula Dracula song (innovative lyrics: courtesy Pa Vijay). Raj Kiran’s experience shines through. He is menacing as the spirit and does well in the comic scenes in the flashback. Kovai Sarala makes an impression after quite some time.

Technically too the movie maintains high standards. Good camera, professional editing all add to the viewing experience. Bhardwaj’s music does not disappoint, however it is S.P.Venkatesh’s BGM that is the real clincher. It adds to the suspense and tension in the first half; full marks. The sound effects too, using a technology new to Tamil cinema are top class.

Let’s sum it up this way. Muni is not a movie that you cannot afford to give a miss. It’s not a classic but it is different, daringly and scaring. If you are the type who loves to be jolted off your seat, Spielberg style or the one who likes getting spooked then this is the right movie for you.

It is Suriya who makes it worth the wait, until the story warms up, although to be fair, Hari keeps a tight rein on the screenplay throughout. Duraisingam is comfortable nabbing thieves who escape with temple jewels or settling petty disputes and playing cop to his relatives in Nallur village in Thoothukudi, although he would rather scale up his father's (played by Radha Ravi) 'maligai kadai' to a departmental store. He has no burning ambition in him to change the world or prove himself. Until two people cross his life.

One is Kavya (Anushka) daughter of Mahalingam ( Nasser), a rich cycle tycoon. The other is Mayilvahanam (Prakash Raj), a racketeer who turns out to be involved in holding children for ransom. By the time Singam stumbles upon that, however, he and Mayil have gone around a few rounds. How Mayil removes Singam from the protective comfort of Nallur and transports him to his 'area' Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai , for the inevitable climax is what the second half is all about.

This is far racier compared to the first, and although you wonder why Suriya has been given such dud steps in 'en idhayam', the other duet, 'kadhal vandhale' makes up for it. Do we see shades of Vijay and

Simran in some of the moves in this number? Surely Hari is not spoofing here? Or music director Devi Sri Prasad? The songs ring a bell, if you know what I mean. Anushka passes muster, and you have seen better reel chemistry between Suriya and his heroines in the past. If you find out why Prakash Raj is so off-colour, do let us know. Vivekh as constable Erimalai is good in parts.

When it's a Hari film, you know what to expect when you walk into the theatre- a chess board hero who is all white, while the villain is totally black, no half measures for you. Even with a sleepy narration in the first 30 minutes or so , 'Singam' is worth a watch.

Sivaji, the superhero does a coin toss, it comes out as head(the way of the Lion) and he decides he will fight it out like a Lion does alone. Sivaji now lands up in jail, from where the movie started.

The second half of the movie is about Rajni the terror He takes revenge on all the corrupt and mighty. He realizes the amount of black money that could be in place all over Tamil Nadu is huge. He lootes all black money of almost all politicians and converts them to white money(through his friends abroad) and starts his work again. Sure enough he becomes a wealthy man and finally after some fighting and chases with CBI on the track of Rajni is able to defeat Suman.

Mani Ratnam has made so many great films(Nayakan, Agni Natchathiram, Roja, Bombay, etc.,.) over the years. But this masterpiece is what put him in the limelight. Mouna Raagam is a perfect example on how a Indian movie should be made. Along with Roja, I believe that Mouna Raagam is Ratnam's best movie. Mohan and Revathi give brilliant heartfelt performances. Some of their scenes will really make you feel what they're feeling. As great as Mohan and Revathi were, Karthik was the real star of Mouna Raagam. He's on-screen for about 25 minutes and what you see is simply a revelation. His defiant ways, his playful antics towards Revathi will make one wonder why he wasn't in the movie longer. Illyaraja's music is absolutely brilliant, but special mention must go to his BGM. The BGM used in several scenes(especially the Karthik-Revathi scenes)is one of Raja's all-time best.

The film opens with Vasudevan (Aadhi) investigating the murder of Ramya (Sindhu Menon), his ex-girlfriend. Although, the reports from evidences imply that she has committed suicide. But Vasu doesn’t give up as he predicts that some secret lies behind her death. Later, he starts investigating the case to the neighbors. But later, it becomes so hard to witness shocking events of her neighbors, watchman and a person who visited the apartment getting killed one by one.

Well, the greatest puzzle is drawn through the weapon used by murderer and that's H20 – Water...

What unfolds next is a series of events that switches from flashbacks to the present time with appalling sequences falling one after one.

First things first: Aadhi does a wonderful job. The actor who was spotted in wild looks in ‘Mirugam’ has completely transformed his appearance. Thanks to director Arivazhagan for estimating him on righteous role. Nanda does justice to his role and the characterization is quite surprising. Sindhu Menon is a good entry to Kollywood. Indeed, she plays the lead role all throughout the show. Saranya Mohan has more matured in her show.

Arivazhagan seems to have lifted some scenes from various foreign films that gradually looses out the interests of audiences who would've watched those films before say, Mirrors, Final Destination, etc…

Musical score by Thaman is average as all the songs have been tuned in the same style. Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography is top-notching with good tone and innovative camera angles. Computer generated graphics have been perfectly done. You will witness it over the title credits. But it seems to be exceeding in levels at certain parts, especially in the sequences where the dark cloud is shown.

Finally, putting 'Eeram' in simple terms, the film has chances doing a fair business in box office. it's a great supernatural thriller of the season that blends romance, emotion and spine-chilling aspects

Manohar, the only person to be aware of the things around, and his friend, police sub-inspector, Shiva (Murli Sharma), work hard to unravel several life threatening mysteries in a suspense filled second half.

Dead Silence left me silently wishing for the death of the celluloid that was in the projector at my local theater . . .

. . . and that's an understatement.

This was just a bad movie. It reminded me of the time I tried to watch Boogeyman only this time I was in the theater and had paid my hard earned money to watch the film so I wasn't about to just walk out.

The story goes - "Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children, only dolls. And if you see her do not scream or she'll rip your tongue out at the seam." Sounds like a great concept and I have to admit that the atmosphere of the film was great - really dark and foreboding. That was probably the only redeeming quality for me was the atmosphere of the film, the look of the dolls and even Mary Shaw herself. Other than that though, I was not impressed.

The town of Raven's Fair has been plagued with the curse of Mary Shaw since she was murdered by local townsfolk after the disappearance of a child who heckled her show. As was indicated in her will she was buried with her doll collection - all 101 of them. The problem was, they didn't stay buried and townsfolk started turning up dead with their tongues ripped out of their heads.

Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) and his lovely wife Lisa (Laura Regan) seem to be living the perfect newlywed life until the night that Billy (Mary Shaw's favorite doll) shows up on their doorstep. After Lisa is brutally murdered and sans one tongue, Jamie goes back to his hometown of Raven's Fair to try and find some answers. He is followed by Det. Jim Lipton (Donnie Wahlberg) who is hell bent on pinning Lisa's murder on him.

Jamie goes to see his father (Bob Gunton) who has seemingly alienated him his whole life. But as we are to find it was with good cause. His father has since remarried a much younger woman, Ella (Amber Valletta) who at first glance seems to be the perfect wife for his now invalid father. Very caring and oh so oddly happy that young Jamie has come back to town.

I think my biggest problem with this film was with character development. I mean I went the entire film not giving one damn about any of the characters. They raced right out of the gate killing one of what you thought might be the main characters and it was like - so what? It's funny how that can work in some films (ex - Scream) but in this one it just didn't do it for me. Besides that even as the film went on there was so much that really just didn't make any sense. It was like things were happening in the film just for the sake of getting the characters to another scene. And while this happens in every film to an extent, in this one it didn't really flow and you knew as you were watching these scenes that things were happening just so other things could take place later.

I don't know, just all in all Dead Silence is not a film to waste your money on in my opinion. Wait till it comes out on cable or something. And believe me it pains me to say that because I really wanted this one to be good.

Vadivelu, Charlie, Pithamaghan Mahadevan form part of the cast. A debutante will play the heroine. Dhina is scoring the music. Shooting for the movie would commence shortly.

The movie starts off with Suriya giving a little tongue-lash for Corporate Houses for treating their employees as mushrooms. A minute later, we realize that he is the trustworthy ally of Prabhu, whose business thrives on illegal diamond trafficking from Africa. With clever strategies and an M Sc degree, Suriya flies across the globe to transport consignments sneaking in and out of the airport scanners in style. That’s pretty much the story - and comes with it the evil motives of Akashdeep Segal, a fellow smuggler who crosses road with the Prabhu & Company. Gang war, a friend’s death, love and some dance sequences – Ayan culminates into a rather predictable climax.

The first half of the movie travels at a supersonic’s pace with rollicking humor (sample this: Renuka, Suriya’s mother, having filled up an SSC (Staff Selection Commission) application form, asks for his sign at the breakfast table. She returns from the kitchen and drops the dosa in horror only to find out that her son has used the application form to collect all the left over chicken bones). Not to mention, Jegan’s natural sense of humor that hugely helps the movie’s progress. Ayan also spells out director Anand’s conscious effort to avoid clichés, scene after scene, with good reason. The first half also defies the rule of gangster movies with Suriya justifying his job to be just ‘time pass’.

And the second half witnesses Suriya doubling up as an assistant to the Narcotic Controls Office. Besides, it was also an atrocious idea to include a Koena Mitra item number out of the blue. With her weird nose-job and chiseled cleavage, she does some aerobics. The climax peaks Anand’s unleashed imagination.

Suriya and Tamanna make a good pair and their love story is devoid of any clichés whatsoever thankfully. And the brilliant writing in their second meet up scene sparks up their chemistry. Prabhu is quite a natural in his role and his Chennai Senthamizh comes handy. The roles of Jegan and Renuka are beautifully developed and performed.

The only eyesore in the movie is Akashdeep Segal, who with his convoluted facial expressions and bad lip sync just doesn’t get anything right.

Harris’s music is scintillating in the Nenje and Iyaayiye songs and the background score flows with the movie. In the Vizhi moodi number Karthik sizzles. Another noteworthy aspect of Ayan is M.S.Prabhu’s cinematography. Congo’s rustic landscape, Puducherry’s by-lanes and Malaysia’s scenic locales come alive in the screen.

Ayan is fun. Just buy a huge bag of popcorn, a can of cola and have a blast! But do remember the first step about the logic

Kanchana is almost similar to Muni in terms of story but Lawrence has taken up a social issue of Hijras in the sequel. The first half of the film has no story and instead packed with painful comedy scenes of Kowai Sarala, Lawrence and Mano Bala, which are loud that tests your patience. The real story of Kanchana starts only in the second half while interval bang was good. The movie picks its momentum with Sarath Kumar’s entry while the climax was once again regular. On the flip side, Kanchana has more of Tamil flavor that will not appeal to all sections of Telugu audiences. Overall, the film has its own thrilling moments.
Verdict: Average.

The story of Vaanam revolves around five individuals, who belong to different professions, lifestyle etc. Simbu plays the role named Cable Raja, who tries to marry a rich girl, Pooja (Jasmine) by pretending that he is also a wealthy man. But the trouble comes in the form of money, as she tells him to get two tickets for a New Year bash at a star hotel. Bharath is an upcoming rockstar, who is all set to perform his first concert. But he misses the flight and sets off to Chennai via Bangalore in a vehicle along with his troupe.

Rahim (Prakash Raj) and wife Zara (Sonia Aggarwal) are a Muslim couple, who lost their twins in a communal riot. They decide to go to Chennai in search of Rahim's brother. But, a police officer
suspects them as terrorists. Lakshmi , a poor woman (Saranya) has to repay the money to bring back her son from a ruthless moneylender, who took her son for labour works. She wants to give her son good education and decides to sell her kidney in Chennai.

Saroja (Anushka) is a prostitute, who stays in Rani Amma's brothel. In order to get away from there and launch her own business, she reaches Chennai and is caught by the police. Now, all the running characters land in the capital city. How the five parallel stories connect each other form the interesting part of the story.

Ajay is diagnosed of cancer and that he would die in few months. Cut to present, Ajay takes Vidya to USA for tratment. Did Ajay meet his wife in US? Did he accept Vidhya in his life?
